Question:
With the budget issues facing the city, how will that impact the police department?
Answer:
Interim Chief Kneblick’s response: The City recognized the need for certain departments like police and fire to be exempt from hiring freezes and allow those entities to continue to hire officers and communications staff. Some positions are impacted but not these. The police department did have to make cuts in their budgets as did other city departments.
Question:
It doesn’t appear that the police department is taking thefts of metals, like copper seriously. What are you doing about these offenses?
Answer:
Captain Cordell’s response: We are reorganizing the management tool we operate under known as CompStat to utilize all Captains and Department Managers to meet weekly and talk about larger issues that impact all parts of the city. The first meeting was last Wednesday (04-16) and the first topic discussed was the impact on metal thefts and actions that could be taken to prevent these offenses. We are currently running an undercover operation targeting these offenses. While I do not want to elaborate on the operation because it is on-going, I will say we have a follow-up discussion set for tomorrow’s meeting. We do recognize the impact of these offenses on property owners and are looking seriously our enforcement and prevention strategies.
Question:
Does the Fort Worth Police Department have plans to place a storefront on Riverside?
Answer:
Captain Cordell’s response: No, we have locations on Lancaster Ave and Evans but not on Riverside.
Question:
There is a man in the Morningside area that supposedly sexually assaulted a young girl but he is still working at the same business near the school. Why is he allowed to do that?
Answer:
Captain Cordell’s response: I am not familiar with the particular details of that case. However, the person is bound by whatever the terms of their probation/ parole in these cases and those terms can vary. We will work through our SCRAM Unit to determine what the provisions are. After the meeting, please get with Lieutenant Carpenter and myself and we will research the case and get an answer for you. (After the meeting we did meet and Lieutenant Carpenter is following up. Deputy Chief Robertson was familiar with the case and it has not gone to trial yet so no provisions are outlined)
