Citizen Awareness Programs
Neighborhood Crime Watch
A neighborhood crime watch group typically covers one city block, both side of the street. Each group has a block captain and an alternate. Members meet periodically and work with police to reduce crime by:
watching each other’s homes learning ways to increase personal safety and security of property reporting suspicious persons and activities to police.
Business Crime Watch
By developing a strong, open line of communication with your neighboring businesses and patrol officers, great strides can be made in reducing, and possibly eliminating, crime at your business.
Citizens on Patrol
Citizens on Patrol acts as additional "eyes and ears" for the police department, within neighborhoods. Citizens volunteer time to actively patrol their neighborhoods to watch for and report suspicious and/or criminal activity.
Citizens Police Academy
Citizens Police Academy is a 12 week (one night per week) informative program for citizens to learn more about the specific areas of the police department.
Personal Situation Awareness
The S.C.R.A.M. Unit personnel are available to talk to groups on "Personal Situational Awareness Training." The training lasts about 2 hours; however, the program can be adjusted to meet the needs of your organization. Topics include: recognizing and acting upon your intuition to reduce the risk of being a victim of a violent assault, who is a predator or attacker--myth vs reality, signals to watch for when encountering a stranger or meeting a new acquaintance, dating relationships--warning signals and potential dangers, risk factors that may increase the chances of a violent personal assault, and drug/alcohol facilitated sexual assaults. Please call (817) 392-4364 for more information or to make arrangements for the program. Their email address is saving.lives@yahoo.com
Residential Security Surveys
No home is burglar proof, but most burglars are opportunists looking for an easy target. The more "secure" a home is, the less attractive it is to a burglar. A police representative will come to your home and make recommendations on how to make your home more secure.
Business Security Surveys - The same concept is used during this survey as when conducting a residential security survey. "Hardening the target" makes your business less likely to be the target of a burglar. A police department representative will come to your business and make recommendations to accomplish this.
Residential Operation I.D.
Residential Operation Identification is a citizen’s burglary deterrent program. This program involves the marking of personal property with a Texas Driver’s License number and the recording of any serial numbers for those items. After making has been accomplished, the citizen is provided window stickers to display, letting the potential burglar know that items have been marked. A police representative is available to assist elderly or handicapped citizens with this task.
Business Operation I.D.
Business Operation Identification is an effort to reduce business theft and aid in the recovery of stolen property. A police representative will come to your business and engrave an identification number onto business owned property. This number is assigned by the police department and is maintained by the police department, allowing easy access for police officers. After engraving is accomplished, window stickers are provided to let the potential burglar know property in the business has been marked.
Vehicle Window Etching
The vehicle window etching is a process whereby a police representative engraves the vehicle identification number onto each window of the vehicle. This visual deterrent may entitle the owner to an insurance premium reduction.
H.E.A.T. (Help End Auto Theft) Program
If a vehicle owner does not drive their vehicle between the hours of 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., they may register their vehicle in this Texas Department of Public Safety program. Then, if the vehicle is out during those hours, any officer in the state of Texas has probable cause to stop the vehicle and assume it has been stolen.
